Your Money Habits Are Running Your Business, Whether You Like It or Not

Podcast Episode 273

If you’ve ever felt like you’re making sales but somehow never have enough left over, it might be time to take a closer look at your money habits.

And I’m not just talking about your business budget. I mean the way you handle money in your personal life, too. Because the truth is simple: how you manage your personal expenses almost always mirrors how you manage your business expenses.

Personal Habits = Business Habits

If you avoid checking your bank account at home, you’ll probably avoid looking at your business books.
If you overspend on “fun” extras personally, you’re likely doing the same with courses, software, or inventory in your business.

The same brain is making both sets of decisions, and in business, those habits cost more.

6 Ways to Fix Sneaky Overspending

1. Track Every Dollar for 14 Days Minimum (30 is best)
Write down every single expense both personal and business. You’ll start to see patterns you didn’t know existed.

2. Put Recurring Payments on a “Money Calendar”
List every subscription and auto-payment so you know exactly what’s leaving your account and when. Be sure to include both monthly and yearly ones.

3. Use Cash Only Method for your Overspending Categories
If there’s an area you constantly go over budget, switch to cash only for that category to force you to pay attention to your purchases.

4. Delay “Nice-to-Have” Purchases by 72 Hours
Impulse fades fast — and many “needs” turn into “I’m fine without it” after a few days.

5. Set a Profit Purpose Before You Spend
If it’s not moving you closer to profit, reconsider.

6. Do a “Future Self” Audit
Check past purchases — did you actually use them? If not, stop buying for the “fantasy you.”
