Don’t Write the Wrong Book:
How Entrepreneurs Can Actually Profit From Publishing

Podcast Episode 285
Somewhere along the entrepreneurial journey, many business owners get hit with the same advice: “You should write a book.”
It sounds impressive. It feels credible. It carries that shiny “author” status.
But here’s the uncomfortable truth…Simply writing a book will not magically grow your business.
In my recent conversation with publishing expert Ally Machate, we pulled back the curtain on what actually happens when entrepreneurs decide to write a book and why so many end up disappointed.
Let’s talk about the stuff nobody tells you.
The Biggest Myth: “Write It and They Will Come”
There is a persistent fantasy floating around the business world that if your book is “good enough,” readers, clients, stages, and opportunities will somehow appear.
They won’t.
A book is not a marketing strategy. It is not a business model. It is not a shortcut to authority.
A book is a tool.
And like any tool, it only works when you use it correctly.
Before You Write a Book, Ask This Question
Not what should I write about?
Not how long should it be?
Not who can design my cover?
The first question is:
What do I want this book to DO for my business?
Do you want:
• Speaking opportunities?
• Higher-ticket clients?
• Credibility in a niche?
• A lead generation asset?
• A relationship-building tool?
Because different goals require different books.
The format, length, content, and even publishing approach change depending on the role your book is meant to play.
Timing Matters More Than You Think
One of the smartest points Ally made is this:
If your business is still in its early “figuring things out” phase, writing a book is often the wrong move.
Why?
Because books demand time, mental energy, and money. Three things most newer business owners are already short on.
More importantly, clarity usually comes from working with real clients, solving real problems, and refining your message.
A book written too early often becomes a snapshot of ideas you later outgrow.
And unlike a social post or website copy…Books don’t quietly disappear.
Not All Publishing Paths Are Created Equal
Entrepreneurs today have more options than ever:
• Traditional publishing
• Hybrid publishing
• Fully DIY self-publishing
• Supported indie publishing
Each comes with trade-offs in speed, control, cost, and expectations.
But the mistake many authors make is choosing based on ego or assumptions instead of strategy. For example, traditional publishing sounds glamorous but it’s slow, selective, and built for selling books at scale.
Business owners typically need something very different.
A Book Should Generate ROI Not Just Compliments
A successful business book is not measured by how nice it looks on your shelf. It’s measured by outcomes.
Does it:
• Start conversations?
• Build authority?
• Open doors?
• Shorten sales cycles?
• Position you differently?
If your book exists but isn’t doing anything for your business, the issue is rarely luck. It’s usually strategy.
The Real Power of a Book
When done intentionally, a book can:
• Accelerate trust
• Pre-sell your expertise
• Differentiate you instantly
• Create leverage you can’t get from short-form content
But none of that happens by accident. And it definitely doesn’t happen just because you “finally became an author.”
Thinking About Writing a Book? Start Here
If this topic has been floating around in your brain, the smartest next step is not opening a blank document.
It’s getting clarity.
Ally created a training called “Don’t Write the Wrong Book,” and honestly, it’s exactly what most entrepreneurs need before they invest months (or years) into the process.
Because the goal isn’t just to write a book.
The goal is to write the right book.
